Frankfurt Panunuluyan 2023
“Panunuluyan” is a Filipino Christmas tradition that reenacts the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of a place to stay in Bethlehem. The word “Panunuluyan” itself is derived from the Tagalog word “tuloy,” which means “to enter” or “to come in.”
Typically held on Christmas Eve, this reenactment is often performed in communities, schools, and even within families. It is a form of a Christmas play or pageant that involves participants going from house to house, asking for shelter, and being turned away until they finally find a welcoming home where they are allowed to enter. The reenactment is usually accompanied by songs, prayers, and other performances.
The aim of Panunuluyan is to reflect on the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey and to emphasize the values of compassion, hospitality, and charity, especially during the Christmas season. It serves as a reminder of the humble beginnings of Jesus and encourages people to open their hearts to those in need. The tradition is deeply rooted in the Philippine culture and adds a meaningful and cultural touch to the celebration of Christmas of the Filipino catholics all over the world.
