The Couples for Christ Foundation for Family and Life (CFC-FFL) Germany held its National Conference in Wetzlar in the state of Hessen on May 26-27 ,2018 with around 160 members participating in the annual event. They came from all over Germany, such as Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, LUbeck, NRW, and Stuttgart.

The gathering started with a Mass con-celebrated by Father Mario Estrella, the Frankfurt-based Chaplain of the Filipino Catholic Community in the Diocese of Limburg as well as Rome-based diocesan priest Father Ronald Arcillas, who had served previously in the Diocese of Calinan, Davao City.

Father Arcillas, currently studying a three-year course on Fundamental Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome, gave the homily. He spoke among other things about obedience, one of the vows he took when he was ordained in December 2013.

The CFC-FFL conference theme itself was "Destined for Greatness", which was taken from 1 Peter 2:9: "But you are 'a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own"'. The two conference speakers were Anselmo Beluso, member of the Board of Trustees of Pro-Life Philippines as well as the Special Assistant to the Servant General, Frank Padilla, in CFCFFL Europe, and Moises Evangelista, CFCFFL Regional Coordinator of Central and Southwest Europe.

Father Arcillas, in his homily, spoke about the time last year when he was asked by Romulo Valles, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Davao and currently President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), to prepare within a very short period of time for his travel to Rome. This had happened while he was confronted with many difficulties in his life. Refocusing oneself in the face of challenges was his leitmotiv, one that had also run through the sessions handled by Mr. Beluso and Mr. Evangelista. Confessions were also heard by Father Arcillas.

The sesslon were interspersed with talks given by three member/leaders - Mila Dayo of Frankfurt, Fina Buhion of Hamburg, and Floricita Grauert of Lubeck. They shared their experiences as they grappled with their own challenges in life and how their spiritual life was enriched as a result.

The speakers' presentations were peppered with creative member participation that drove home the points such as rallying around a leader and having a unified voice. As all the meetings were full of laughter the participants were able to shake off the drowsy summer afternoons and were glued to the messages being imparted - being a warrior of God, evangelization, taking on the task of leadership, unconditional love of God, importance of daily prayers, reading bible scriptures, as well as tolerance and forgiveness to community members.

A highlight was a so-called "fellowship night", basically an evening of song and dances, which had the "Roaring Twenties" as its theme. Members were attired in the 1920s style and various groups presented either a dance or a song or mix of both. A Tombola draw had a free plane ticket to the Philippines as the first prize.

The conference was culminated with a "Praise Fest", a marathon session of praising the Lord with songs and prayers. lt was led by Warren Abrajano, the North Rhine-Westpalia-based leader of the CFC Singles for Family and Life.
